Five Things that Take a Serious Toll on Your Tires

Tires are a big expense and you certainly don’t want to replace them before you truly have to. But Sammy’s Auto knows that if you understand what shortens the lifespan of your tires, you can do more to protect them.

Potholes

Potholes aren’t just an eyesore. They’re also dangerous to your tires and to your car’s suspension. Depending on how sharp the edges are on the potholes, they can dig into the rubber, even compromising weak spots on the tire. If you think driving through a pothole faster is the better option, it truly isn’t.

Road Debris

Road debris accounts for a lot of different objects in the road. There could be construction debris, like metal panels that cover holes temporarily, but there is other debris, too. Branches, trash, and even some things that should never be in the road like random metal pieces, can all end up in the main lane of travel. Each can do their little bit of damage and if your tires are already in bad shape, that damage might be catastrophic.

Curbs

Curbs can very easily be a nemesis for your car’s tires. They’re everywhere, for starters, and it’s way too easy to bump into one now and again. A close cousin to curbs are those parking stops in parking lots. These can also do a number on your tires if you’re in the habit of bumping into them often.

Gravel

Gravel is rough on everything that it encounters, including your tires. Each piece of gravel has rough edges that grind away at the rubber of your tires. Some pieces can even be sharpened to almost a point. If that point hits your tire in a weak spot, you can easily get a blowout or at the very least, some serious damage.

Your Own Driving Habits

No one wants to hear this, but your own driving habits could be a bit of a problem when it comes to tire wear. If you’re one of those folks who accelerates quickly, brakes late, and basically corners like you’re on a track, you’re not doing your tires any favors at all. Easing up just a little bit can help your tires to live a slightly longer life.
