Four Reasons You Might Hear Engine Knocks in Your Car

If you’ve ever heard engine knocks you know how annoying they can be. They’re also called misfires, and they’re a cause of engine damage eventually. Figuring out what’s causing engine knocks helps to protect your car’s engine, and Sammy’s Auto has information you need.

You’re Using the Wrong Fuel

Did you see anything in your car’s owner’s manual that recommended a specific octane level when you fill up your car’s tank? If you ignored it, you are not alone at all. Plenty of car owners go ahead and get lower octane levels when they fill up, but then they hear engine knocks. The wrong octane level can cause all sorts of problems for your car’s engine. Most of the time the damage isn’t permanent, unless you just never bump up the fuel you’re getting.

There’s Another Fuel Issue

There could be another type of fuel issue, though. If there’s a problem in the fuel pump or if there’s stuff getting through the fuel filter, that can cause engine knocks. Likewise, if there are issues with the fuel injectors, your car’s engine might not be getting all the fuel it needs. All of this is something that an experienced auto technician can correct for you and that will solve the engine knocks.

Or a Spark Issue

If the spark is off at all, that can cause engine knocking, too. That’s because the spark is what helps to fire off the fuel and keep the engine running. Problems with the spark plug wiring or with the spark plugs themselves can cause big issues in the engine. Sometimes the spark plugs aren’t completely bad, but they’re failing, and that can cause intermittent issues.

Knock Sensors Could Be Bad

It’s also possible that the knock sensors which help the engine control module recognize that engine knocks are happening aren’t working. When they fail, the ECM doesn’t have information pointing to a problem. The sensors exist simply to pick up the knocks and if they’re not doing that at all, the onboard computer can’t even make a correction.
