Tire wear happens constantly, but ideally it happens at a fairly even pace around all four of your car’s tires. But that’s not always the case, especially if there are some of these situations at play. Here’s what Sammy’s Auto wants you to know about tread wear on your car’s tires.
They’re Out of Balance or Out of Alignment
When you ignore tire services, specifically services like wheel alignments and tire balancing, that affects how the tires function. You might get away with it for a while, but eventually the tires are going to start wearing away unevenly. You could start experiencing handling issues, too, which in turn makes the tread wear away faster. It’s a vicious cycle that you could stop by simply making sure you keep up with wheel and tire maintenance on a regular basis.
They’re Improperly Inflated
Proper tire inflation is such a simple thing and so many car owners ignore it completely. Even if your tires look like they’re fine or the TPMS isn’t giving you any warnings, that doesn’t mean that the tires are at the right pressure. Whether they have too much or too little air in them, that incorrect air pressure means that the tires aren’t making contact with the road the way that they should, and that causes some parts of the tire to wear away more quickly than other parts. Eventually you’ll have a big problem on your hands.
They’re Old and Damaged
It’s so easy to forget how old your tires really are. You buy them and then expect them to stick around for a long time to come. But over time, the rubber breaks down and the tires get old. The valve stems may not work as well, either, contributing to inflation problems. All of that can mean that there are some spots on each tire that are weaker than others, and that can wear away at a faster rate. If you’re not keeping up with how old your tires are, you’re more likely to be surprised when they’re so damaged it’s time to replace them.
