What Filters Are in Your Car?

Do you know what filters are in your car? Sammy’s Auto has some information you can use regarding filters.

Oil Filter

The filter you might hear the most about in your car could be the oil filter. This filter gets changed every single time that you get the oil changed in your car. It helps to keep the oil as clean as possible as it’s circulating through the engine. If the oil filter gets clogged, your car’s oil may be too dirty to do what it has to do in the engine. You might also see oil leaks under your car if the oil can’t move freely through the filter.

Fuel Filter

After your car’s fuel pump moves gas out of the gas tank, it sends that gas through the fuel filter. That’s so that any sediment or debris in the gas is removed before it makes its way to the combustion chamber in the car’s engine. If that debris isn’t removed, there’s going to be a bigger boom in the combustion chamber than there should be, and that’s a problem. Typically fuel filters need to be changed out every 30,000 miles or so.

Air Filter

The air filter is probably going to be the filter you change out more often, besides the oil filter, of course. The big job of the air filter is keeping anything besides air out of your car’s engine. As your car moves and as it draws in air around it, there can be all sorts of debris and dust that get sucked into the air manifold. Just like the fuel filter keeps combustible materials out of the engine, so too does the air filter. It can get dirty pretty quickly, so it’s a good idea to check your air filter yourself periodically just to see how dirty it is.

Cabin Air Filter

Did you know that your car has a secondary air filter? This one is the filter that further helps to keep pollen, dust, and more out of the air that is destined for the passenger compartment of your car. This filter is one that you might want to change out once a year or so, especially if you have allergies or other breathing issues. If your car smells musty or it seems dirtier than usual, you might want to check or replace the cabin air filter.
